Useful Quotes That Stuck with Me See all

Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.

—Charles Stewart, though often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, incorrectly, according to Quote Investigator®

There’s a paradox here, I know: The quote discourages judging people, and then does exactly that!

So that’s why I purposefully left out this quote in my list of Useful Quotes That Stuck With Me, at first anyway.

Still, the quote did stick with me and it has proven useful, time and again. It would be dishonest of me to leave it out 🤷‍♀️

So here we go:

Everyone loves some hot tea. Gossip was always in demand, because knowing stuff about others, especially the kind that could hurt them, provides leverage — power, even. I get it.

Now, consider this: If there were no people to discuss, small minds would have no leverage, no power, nothing. All they brought to the table was effectively created by others. In other words — small minds bring nothing to the table, nothing of lasting value.

Great minds, on the other hand, are wholly concerned with evolving; with expanding and building upon, examining ideas and creating new ones.

Great minds add; small minds subtract. Average minds do a bit of both, I suppose.

And while I would never describe myself as a ‘Great Mind’, I actively avoid discussing other people, I don’t gossip and I steer clear of rumor mills.

Mind your own business and put your art into the world. Who cares what everyone else is up to?
